I obtained a MasterCard travel money Escape card in Euro currency prior to holidaying in Europe for about five weeks. On the whole it has been of great benefit but there are a few problems which I hope the issuers will address. Indeed, I have the impression that I was dealing with a rather fragile prototype. Let’s hope it comes good in due course.

Problem 1 – you cannot top it outside the UK (no Phones4U shops) unless you set up an associated beneficiary account linked to an existing bank account. This is a slow, cumbersome and somewhat arcane process.

Problem 2 – if you arrange to transfer funds from the beneficiary account it seems to take ages before the money appears on the card (from memory, at least four days).

Problem 3 – we hired a car in France for a few days and made the mistake of paying the holding deposit of 700Euro on the Escape card. The amount is not shown on the account as a debit but as a “Reservation” which means that you cannot use that money until it has been released. Nine days after returning the car in good condition I am stll waiting for the reservation to be lifted. Suggest, if you have one, always use your normal credit card deposit for any such deposits. I have never had a problem with this particuar car hire group in the past when using my credit card.

On the positive side their Customer Services people have always been helpful and prompt in their replies. However, the do not seem to have any influence on the snail-pace movement of funds.
